CANADIAN ARMY: ARTHUR BARLOW
|
Andrew Redmond and his wife Elizabeth Hayes came to England from Wexford in around 1846, at time of the
Irish Potato Famine. Andrew was a stonemason and they settled in Rainhill with there children and mother in law Johanna Hayes.
Andrew and Elizabeth had 10 children, 3 born in Ireland and 7 in England. Their youngest daughter was Ellen,
born in Rainhill in 1859.
Ellen married Rishton Barlow, a sanitary engineer (plumber) from Hulme, and they lived in Barton upon Irwell.
The Barlows were originally from Blackburn where they worked in the cotton industry but Rishtons father,
Rushton, had moved to Salford where he was a Wholesale Pickle Manufacturer.
When Rushton Barlow died in 1886 George Barlow took over the running of the pickle factory, but in 1911 he left
with his family for a new life in Toronto, Canada. They expected to be farm labourers and lived at 78 Courcelette Road, Toronto.
In 1918 Georges son Arthur Barlow was drafted by the Canadian army to fight in WW1.
Rishton and Ellen Barlow had 2 survivng boys, Lawrence who was a plumber and Rishton who was a joiner,
although Rishton was a soldier when he married Kathleen Wilkinson in December 1915 (a few days after the death of his father), and Lawrence was a sergeant in the RAF when he died.
Lawrence was buried at St.Asaph, North Wales in 1946.
Rishton worked for a building firm (Wooller & Sons) in Salford, but after divorce in 1927 he married Catherine
McGinn and moved to Huddersfield.
Maud Barlow, was the second of 4 sisters (Ellen, Alice and Ruth) and married Theodore Fisher in 1924.
